For years, football analytics tried to understand teams by adding up individual actions. More passes. More touches. More duels. More running.
But teams don’t play as collections of players.
They play as systems.
This paper makes a deceptively simple claim: if you want to understand how a team really plays, you shouldn’t start with players at all — you should start with relationships.
Not who passed the ball.
But who connects whom, where, when, and under what constraints.
That shift, from events to interactions, changed how modern football analysis thinks about structure, control, and dominance.
Seeing Football as a Networked System
The core idea is elegant: every pass creates a connection, and over time those connections form a network.
Nodes are not just players. Edges are not just passes.
They are directional, weighted, spatially embedded, and time-dependent.
With this, football isn’t a list of actions anymore and starts looking like a living system that reorganises itself continuously during the match.
Crucially, this approach isn’t interested in isolating performance.
It’s interested in how performance emerges.
A centre back’s value is no longer only about how many passes he completes, it’s about whether he connects otherwise distant parts of the team.
A midfielder’s influence isn’t volume — it’s whether removing him would fragment the structure.
This is where network thinking becomes dangerous — in a good way.

Why Individual Metrics Miss the Point
One of the article’s strongest underlying arguments is philosophical rather than technical.
Football is a complex system.
And complex systems cannot be understood by analysing components independently.
This matters because so much evaluation still assumes independence:
Player A has xG.
Player B has xA.
Player C has progressive passes.
But none of those explain why a team can move the ball through pressure, or why it collapses when one player is marked out of the game.
Network analysis reframes value as structural contribution:
Who shortens paths between players?
Who acts as a bridge between units?
Who absorbs pressure by redistributing connectivity?
That’s a fundamentally different way of thinking about roles — especially in midfield and build-up.
