A 4–0 win, a 2–1 win, a late 1–0 win away from home, and a chaotic 3–2 comeback all end up in the same column: Win.

Useful, but also dangerous.

Because not all wins are built from the same information. Some matches are decided by dominance. Others are decided by small margins: one transition, one sprint, one duel, one shot, one moment where a player still has enough energy and quality to execute.

Instead of analysing every match, the authors focus only on close matches in the German Bundesliga, defined as games where the final goal difference was one goal or fewer. Across three seasons, they analysed almost 8,000 individual player observations and separated the results by position: central defenders, fullbacks, central midfielders, wide midfielders, and forwards.

What they did, briefly

The study combined:

  • Physical outputs

  • Technical actions

  • Match location

  • Player position

  • Season-to-season changes

The aim was not just to ask whether running, passing, shooting, or playing at home matters. The more interesting question was:

Which of those signals still matter when the match is genuinely close?

Close matches remove some of the noise created by extreme scorelines. They are not perfect, of course, but they give us a better window into the kind of games where margins matter most.

The same variable does not matter equally for every player. The same context does not affect every role in the same way. And the same physical output can mean very different things depending on whether it comes from a forward, a wide midfielder, or a centre back.

Home advantage appears in every positional model. That is not surprising. We already know that match location shapes football performance.

But the interesting part is that the home effect is not distributed evenly across positions.

The paper finds that the estimated home effect varies strongly depending on role, from wide midfielders at the lower end to central midfielders at the higher end. In other words, home advantage is not just a team-level condition. It changes the environment in which specific players operate.

That is a useful idea.

A central midfielder at home may be asked to take more responsibility, receive more often, connect more attacks, and impose more rhythm. A wide midfielder may still be constrained by the same repeated physical demands, regardless of venue. A centre back may see the match location effect show up less through individual actions and more through the broader tactical context around them.

So even before looking at the physical and technical variables, the paper already makes one thing clear:

Context does not act equally on every position.


We often compare players using outputs detached from role, game state, venue, team style, and tactical intention. But close matches expose how fragile that can be. When the match is balanced, the decisive signal is rarely just “more” of something. It is whether the right player can still perform the right action in the right context.

Before getting into the main insights, it is worth pausing on what the paper does not say.

It does not say that simply running more wins matches.
It does not say that sprinting more is always better.
It does not say that one variable explains football.

The real value is more practical than that. It shows how different roles appear to contribute to winning close matches through different pathways.
